There is a deeper personal meaning in all the stories of sacred Scripture, which is why Jesus spoke in parables. Parables use earthly images to represent spiritual characteristics. Many are used in everyday language. For example, “as good as gold.” You may find that a useful technique is to read a verse in the Bible and after every noun add the words “in me.” So, for example, you may have “the king-in-me,” “the rock-in-me,” the “poverty-in-me,” and yes, even the “God-in-me.” This method may seem strange at first but it will help you to see that, for example, there is something king-like in you, some ruling principle which guides your thinking. You will see that the sacred Scriptures are all about our inner selves and you will realise that all we need to do is apply them to ourselves. For more on this way of understanding the Scriptures see the booklet, The Bible’s Deeper Meaning, available from our centre on request.
